Developing evidence-based programs that are in harmony with the culture of its participants are challenging to design, implement, and evaluate. This webinar includes a discussion on the use and application of evidence-based programs (EBPs) with racially/ethnically diverse populations, including potential challenges when making cultural adaptations. We also explore the use of practice-based programs and the role that evaluation plays. With the increased emphasis on the use of EBPs within the behavioral health field, it is important to understand organizations’ experiences and understanding of EBPs with the populations they serve. A Latino youth serving organization shares their experiences with EBPs and their challenges in finding programs that meet the needs of the Latino immigrant families they serve.

They share the steps taken to develop, implement, and evaluate their own practice-based program, a trauma-informed Family Reunification and Strengthening Program for Latino families who have experienced immigration-related family separations. The main goal of the program is to help families understand that perceived, incompatible differences can and should be overcome to ensure healthy youth development and family stability. We present a framework identifying the key issues in developing culturally responsive programs, followed by presentations and discussion among the panelists.
