The Just Imperative, established in 2018, is a vital way the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation (MacArthur Foundation) works towards its goal of making the world fairer, greener, and more peaceful. It’s based on the Foundation’s values, especially diversity, equity, and inclusion. This means the Foundation carefully looks at its choices and actions to enhance the conditions in which justice can thrive. It focuses on breaking down systems, rules, and habits that support racism or lead to unfair results.

The Just Imperative Retrospective Evaluation explains how Community Science, together with the Learning Officer and Evaluation and Learning Committee, will review how well the Just Imperative has been put into action. The goal is to see how much progress the MacArthur Foundation has made with the Just Imperative in the past five years. Community Science will use a step-by-step method to understand the key parts of the Foundation’s equity strategies. This will help spot what’s worked well and what needs improving. By making a detailed timeline and checking real-time data, Community Science aims to suggest helpful ideas for the Foundation’s future. This process draws upon our expertise in facilitating organizations’ ongoing learning and development, aiding the Foundation in upholding its mission of fostering justice and equity.
