In response to survey data in early 2006 indicating that teenagers in Telluride, Colorado, had drug and alcohol usage rates above the national average, the Telluride Foundation launched a drug and alcohol prevention program at two local high schools. The program funded a counselor to develop and implement a prevention curriculum as well as to provide direct services to students at risk for, or recovering from, substance abuse. Community Science evaluated pre-and post-test student feedback forms, conducted a series of on-site interviews with teachers and school administrators, and held interviews or focus groups with students to ascertain the program’s value and identify changes in student attitudes and behaviors.
